In the bustling heart of Nandyal, a town in Andhra Pradesh, Udayananda Hospital is quietly scripting a story of transformation, one that blends healthcare with sustainability. With the successful installation of a 200-kilowatt rooftop solar system, the hospital has not only taken a major step toward energy independence but also showcased how renewable energy can strengthen the very backbone of critical services like healthcare.

For most hospitals, electricity is not a luxury, it’s a lifeline. From 24/7 lighting to running diagnostic machines and climate control systems, power is central to smooth operations. But it’s also one of the biggest cost centers. Recognising the growing strain of electricity bills and the need for long-term efficiency, the hospital’s management began exploring alternatives. Solar energy quickly emerged as the ideal solution, offering a rare alignment of economic viability and environmental stewardship.

To bring this vision to life, Udayananda partnered with Orb Energy, one of India’s leading solar energy companies. The result: a customised rooftop solar system featuring 494 solar modules of 405Wp each and two 70kVA inverters—all mounted on a specially engineered superstructure designed to optimise rooftop space without compromising aesthetics.

Since going live, the plant has been generating around 60% of the hospital’s daytime energy needs, dramatically cutting reliance on the state grid. More impressively, the hospital now saves nearly ₹20 lakh per year on electricity costs—savings that can be redirected to enhance patient care, upgrade medical infrastructure, or invest in staff training. With a three-year payback period, the solar system is projected to deliver nearly free power for the next two decades.

Dr. N. Srinath Reddy, Managing Partner of Udayananda Hospital, shared his viewpoints stating, “Orb Energy designed and installed a customised rooftop solar system on a super structure for our hospital. We are very pleased with the aesthetics of our rooftop solar system, and that it is now meeting 60% of our daytime electricity needs.”

The shift is also a win for the environment. By switching to solar, the hospital is significantly reducing its carbon footprint, an increasingly critical metric for institutions under pressure to operate more sustainably. The system not only curbs emissions but also protects the hospital from rising energy tariffs and potential power outages, adding a layer of energy resilience that’s crucial in healthcare.

Commenting on the project, Damian Miller, Co-founder and CEO of Orb Energy, said, “Our goal is to help institutions like Udayananda Hospital transition to solar with confidence. By tailoring each installation to the client’s needs, we ensure optimal performance and long-term value.”

As India ramps up its renewable energy ambitions, Udayananda Hospital’s experience offers a compelling blueprint for others in the sector. It’s a story of foresight, partnership, and impact, proving that sustainable choices are not just environmentally sound, but also smart business decisions. Because in the future of healthcare, clean energy may be as vital as clean instruments.
