Q1. How was your experience at SEMICON India 2025, since this is the second time India is hosting the event?
Sumit: The experience has been extremely positive. This event brings together leading stakeholders from the semiconductor industry, including end customers who are establishing new facilities across India and beyond. Our interactions with senior industry leaders provided valuable insights into the latest technologies being implemented in semiconductor manufacturing.
At the same time, these discussions allow us to explore how Mitsubishi Electric can add value to such initiatives by offering solutions that support the Government of India’s vision for semiconductor growth.
SEMICON India is a strategic platform for us. Unlike companies focused on a single product, Mitsubishi Electric offers a comprehensive range of solutions. At our booth, we showcased offerings spanning from mechanical to electrical systems—positioning ourselves as a one-stop solutions provider for the semiconductor sector.
Q2. On the first day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Bay of India chip, referring to it as a “Digital Diamond.” What are your thoughts on this initiative?
Sumit: The “Digital Diamond” initiative is a landmark development. Historically, India has relied heavily on global semiconductor markets. With this move toward localization, the country is taking a significant step forward.
Mitsubishi Electric fully aligns with this vision. Our strategy also emphasizes localization—ensuring that our solutions, whether in air conditioning, elevators and escalators, factory automation, or switchgear, are manufactured and supported within India. This reinforces our commitment to the Indian market and sends a clear message that Mitsubishi Electric is here to contribute to the nation’s semiconductor journey in a sustainable, long-term manner.
Q3. Mitsubishi Electric has been investing in local operations. Can you elaborate on these investments and how they support the semiconductor ecosystem?
Sumit: Mitsubishi Electric has made substantial investments in India. For example, our air conditioning plant in Chennai will be operational by the end of this financial year. In Bangalore, our chiller facility is expanding to double its current capacity. We also have established manufacturing units for elevators and escalators, a factory automation facility in Talegaon, Pune, and UPS production in Bangalore.
These localized facilities not only strengthen our supply chain but also ensure timely delivery and strong after-sales service. Our customers benefit from both advanced product solutions and reliable long-term support—key factors in building a robust semiconductor ecosystem.
Q4. What new products and technologies has Mitsubishi Electric showcased at this event?
Sumit: As a Japanese multinational, Mitsubishi Electric takes a disciplined approach to technology. We are committed to offering Indian customers the same high-quality solutions that we deliver globally to semiconductor plants.
In semiconductor manufacturing, the plant is broadly divided into two areas: the fabrication area, where chip production occurs, and the utility area, which supports the fab operations.
- For power management, we provide switchgear solutions with type-tested panels to ensure reliable power distribution.
- On the cooling side, we offer precision air conditioning solutions—such as chillers—for cleanroom environments, alongside VRFs, ducted, cassette, and split ACs for office spaces.
- Through factory automation systems, we enable end-to-end automation, monitoring, and operational efficiency of both fab and utility areas.
- Our UPS solutions ensure continuous, stable power supply, critical to uninterrupted semiconductor production.
Overall, Mitsubishi Electric covers nearly 60–70% of the mechanical and electrical requirements for semiconductor facilities. Our presence at SEMICON India 2025 underscores our commitment to serving as a comprehensive solutions partner for semiconductor manufacturers in India.
