ScioSense targets residential gas meter market with new UFM-G01

ScioSense has introduced the UFM-G01, a flow measurement module based on ultrasonic flow-sensing technology, targeting the residential natural gas meter market. It offers a modern, plug-and-play alternative to legacy thermal and mechanical mass flow technologies.

ScioSense, the manufacturer of advanced sensor ICs and sensor modules, launched its latest gas flow measurement module – the UFM-G01.

Legacy gas flow measurement technologies, such as thermal mass flow sensing, can measure gas flow by adding heat sensors and a heater in the path of the gas. As gas passes the sensor, tiny molecules act as heat carriers, absorbing thermal energy and creating a temperature difference between the sensors.

The UFM-G01 uses ultrasonic flow measurement for gas flow instead. Two transducers are positioned within the pipe without affecting the flow of gas, and an ultrasonic burst is sent through the fluid. The timings of these bursts are measured, and the difference is used to calculate the volumetric flow rate. It is designed to be integrated into gas-measurement products and currently targets G4-class residential gas meters.

Compared with thermal mass flow sensing, ultrasonic measurement offers broader gas compatibility, lower pressure loss in the flow path, and strong long-term stability with minimal intrusion into the gas stream. It is also well suited to battery-powered residential meters thanks to its low-power architecture and is already widely established in gas metering applications.

Manufactured for low-power applications, the UFM-G01 is designed to run at voltages between 3.2V and 5.5V and features an energy consumption of typ. 262 mAh/year. If further power saving is required, the pulse frequency can be varied. This can be achieved via software to reduce power consumption.

The UFM-G01 module can accurately measure a wide range of gas flows, up to an accuracy of ±1.5%. This makes it suitable for residential & small commercial gas distribution systems as well as small to medium-sized gas burners and boilers. Additionally, the UFM-G01 can measure low flow gas volumes, making it suitable for gas leakage detection.

The module is packaged as an all-in-one sensor including pressure and temperature sensors. In total, the UFM-G01 can measure transient flow rate, cumulative flow rate, gas temperature, gas pressure, and sound speed. Since the ultrasonic sensor has virtually no contact with the incoming flow stream, the sensor module has a service life of up to 15 years.

The UFM-G01 can be quickly and efficiently installed with minimal disruption, thanks to its plug-and-play design, communicating with a host device using UART input/output. Where further customisation is necessary, ScioSense can adapt and customise the modules to match customer-specific needs.

“Combined with its very competitive price point, the UFM-G01 will be a go-to module for most residential gas sensing requirements,” said Andreas Blocherer, Senior Product & Marketing Manager at ScioSense.

Key features of the UFM-G01 include:

  • • Operating temperature range: -20°C to +50°C
  • • Measurement gas types: Air, CH4
  • • 16 to 7200l/h flow measurement range
  • • Pressure measurement range: 260 hPa to 1260 hPa
  • • Less than 150 Pa pressure loss

You can check out the UFM-G01 at the ScioSense booth nr. B4.123 at Electronica, which is scheduled for November 10-13, 2026, at the Messe München in Munich.
