Polymatech Electronics Signs MoU with Orbray, Japan – Enters into Wafer Fabrication

Polymatech Electronics, India’s first opto-semiconductor chips manufacturer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Japanese Company Orbray Co. Ltd. As part of the agreement, Orbray will provide training to Polymatech Electronics engineers at their facility in Japan. Subsequently, Polymatech Electronics will establish its wafers fabricated ion in Polymatech facility will be primarily for captive consumption. Moreover, Polymatech Electronics surplus capacity will be catered to companies entering the Indian market for packaging and other ATMP and OSAT units who may require sapphire wafers and bare dies.

Elaborating on the development, Eswara Rao Nandam, Managing Director & CEO of Polymatech Electronics, said, “This is a historic day for us as we move closer to our company’s vision of becoming a ‘Fully integrated – End-to-End – Semiconductor Company’. This MoU will enable us to progress towards converting Ingot into products, thereby entering the next level of our growth story.”

Orbray (formerly Adamant Namiki Seimitsu Houseki Kabushiki-gaisha) is an 85-year-old Japanese precision components manufacturer with a global footprint. The company is a leading manufacturer of optical fibre components, Sapphire Wafers and micro motors in various plants worldwide.

As of date, Polymatech Electronics is the only Indian company to develop, produce, and package opto-semiconductor chips since 2019. With customers in the US, EU, and MENA countries, the company’s current production capacity is 2,000 Mn chips. The company manufactures opto-semiconductor chips at its Oragadam, Tamil Nadu facility and have exported more than USD 125 Mn in 2023-24.

Sharing the company’s future plans, Eswara Rao Nandam added, “This is a considerable investment, and we will apply with the Government of India for capital subsidy under applicable schemes and respective state governments. Polymatech Electronics previously signed an MoU with the Government of Tamil Nadu on 27th May 2020.

We are also in advanced discussions with Silicon Carbide Wafer and Silicon Wafer fabrication machinery suppliers to accelerate our plans to become multi-wafer producers. As part of Polymatech Electronics’ initiative to make high-end semiconductor chips, we will supply all these wafers to companies entering the Indian market for packaging and other businesses.”

The Chennai-based company designs, manufactures, packages, and assembles semiconductor chips and chip modules for various applications, including medical, agriculture, large-area lighting, PCs, laptops, and cell phone backlights.
