The world stands at a crucial juncture where understanding environmental impact is an aspect that is being focused on irrespective of technologies. In the consumer electronics & computer peripherals sector, growing emphasis on creating sustainable products that reduce the carbon footprint is also being conceptualized and rolled out gradually. Along with environmental impact and carbon footprints, the objective of this is to reduce dependency on disposable and rechargeable batteries that are often heavy, and expensive and use minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and graphite — the production chain of which involves significant carbon emission and often leads to wastage.

These concerns have led electronics brands to look for alternatives, which has led the discussion centred around creating eco-friendly and battery-free computer accessories. A few industry stakeholders have introduced beta models of computer peripheral devices already that are equipped with solar cell technologies and are devoid of any batteries, rechargeable or otherwise. While this technology itself is not new, its integration in electronics & computer peripherals products is a very new approach in this regard and potentially opens an entire new landscape of opportunities going forward.

A transformation in the making

What sets solar technology in electronics apart goes beyond the emphasis on creating battery-free products. As the technology matures, this will help to take the innovation and development in the space beyond what it is today. As batteries, irrespective of being disposable or rechargeable, become outdated, this will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the sector, leading to more sustainable alternative products that are not only more efficient but also cost-effective, eco-friendly and power efficient. As sleeker designs take over, the new generation of computer peripheral products would not be equipped with batteries, charging ports, or hatches for accessibility. This will effectively bring in robust designs that would eliminate the requirement for maintenance, save user time and reduce any expenditures related to the same. As these products are unburdened from the restrictions of conventional battery technology, solar cell technology helps to deliver over double or triple the amount of additional power that is currently possible. The increased power density helps to add new aspects like embedded lights, making ambient attraction possible. With little to no development in computer peripherals for a long time, this promises a comprehensive transformation, and by integrating it with modern-day technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), the resulting product validation can be immense. 

In the Indian context, the country already boasts of its first-ever AI mouse, and potential developments in the future where solar cell technologies are used to transform the power aspect, scalability could be a matter of time.

Relevant statistical data in the segment helps to clarify why it is a potent update over traditional technology. As per the US Environmental Protection Agency, almost 3 billion batteries are purchased every year, with an average of 32 for each family and 10 for every individual. Since the environmental cost of batteries is well known and creates waste and pollution factors for ecosystems, creating computer peripherals without them could be the first step towards creating sustainable computer accessories as the benchmark in the future.

While many would be curious to understand what impact it would have on the entire computer peripheral ecosystem, it is rather simple to understand. With this new technology in play, unprecedented innovation regarding design, efficiency and productivity could be explored in the space. Since this new technology is devoid of any battery support, this will also be a proactive move for creating a demand for products that supplement the global emphasis on sustainability. With mineral-based batteries out of the equation and given user adoption of these new-age technologies, it will also directly translate into reduced product prices for users, hinting at considerable scalability for brands. In general, this would be a significant transformation in the development of new-age computer peripheral products that are both eco-friendly and battery-free — establishing these products as the benchmark going forward.

Looking ahead

As mentioned before, while solar technology is not new, integrating the same within computer peripherals for creating sustainable and battery-free products would be a challenge in itself. However, the considerations for undertaking this effort have already been made by several industry stakeholders out there, however, it would be some time before such innovative products are introduced in the market. With brands focusing on creating AI-integrated computer peripherals presently, a simultaneous focus by diversifying the innovation process could be helpful, however, all of it depends on user preferences and requirements that will shape the narrative on solar-energy-equipped products. However, the rapid development in the space is also leading brands to find differentiating factors, so it would not be surprising if the development aspect of these products were bolstered and introduced in the next few years.
