The first Made-in-India chips are expected to be available by December 2024, according to Union Minister for Communications and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw.
In accordance to the minister, 4-5 semiconductor facilities are likely to be built in the country within a year.
“The first Made-in-India chip will be available by December 2024,” Vaishnaw said during a press conference following a joint statement issued by US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US.

He stated that the land allocation, factory design work, and tax compliance agreement for the Micron semiconductor plant to be built in Gujarat had all been finished.
“The first made-in-India chip from Micron is expected in about six quarters,” Vaishnaw said.

Micron, a developer of computer storage chips, would invest USD 2.75 billion (about Rs 22,540 crore) in Gujarat to build a semiconductor manufacturing and testing plant.
The overall cost of the factory is USD 825 million from Micron, with the remaining funds coming from the government in two installments. The facility’s construction will begin in stages in 2023. Phase 1 will be operational in late 2024, with 500,000 square feet of projected clean room space.
Micron expects the plant to generate up to 5,000 new direct jobs and 15,000 new community jobs over the following few years.
